DA in Knysna supports dignified removal of illegal structures

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Knysna does not support illegal land invasion, but we do insist that structures should be removed in a way that preserves people's dignity.

The Knysna Municipality has a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to deal with the mushrooming of illegal structures which must be adhered to. The SOP is clear that only structures that are partially built and/or not occupied will be demolished.

We don't believe in criminal activity and vandalism of businesses and hope that the matter will be resolved as soon as possible so that peace can prevail in Hornlee.

Furthermore, the DA has also noted the allegations made against Councillors Opperman and Wolmarans for calling on the Red Ants to remove illegal structures. We vehemently refute these accusations and categorically deny their involvement in the "deployment" of the Red Ants to Hornlee. Only the Administration through the Municipal Manager or Director Community Services has the authority to authorise the deployment of the Red Ants to demolish illegal structures.

The DA is committed to upholding the rules and regulations of our local government while preserving the dignity and well-being of all our residents.
