DA condemns horrific murder of Anele Bhengu

14th June 2021

The DA sends its heartfelt condolences to the Bhengu family whose daughter, Anele Bhengu, was brutally murdered over the weekend in KwaMakhutha in an alleged hate crime.

At just 22 year's old Anele’s life was ended through grotesque acts of violence allegedly motivated by her identification as a lesbian.

The DA will be visiting Anele's family to offer our condolences and we intend to follow up with SAPS to ensure that her case is prioritised and that justice is pursued.

The continued instances of brutal attacks against people who identify as LGBTQIA+ cannot be tolerated. As we celebrate Pride Month, there must be significant effort to prioritise the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes against the LGBTQIA+ community.

The DA will continue to fight for the right of every person in the LGBTQIA+ community to live in an environment free of discrimination and fear.
