DA cleans playground in quest to redeem parks

16th August 2022

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has cleaned up a children’s playground in Upington and is working towards getting Dawid Kruiper municipality to redeem parks and recreational facilities in the town. See before pics here, here and here and after pics here , here , hereand here.

A dual project by the DA and Afriforum, that kicked off last week, saw the Stasiekamp playground in Kalahari Street, cleaned up. The park has been in a worsening condition since 2004 and saw the clean-up team remove 16 tons of building rubble, papers, glass bottles and grass.

While the area has been transformed from what resembled a dump site, back into a recognizable playground, the DA now wants to uplift the playground further and we aim to paint and repair the swings in the near future.

In the DA’s quest to redeem playgrounds, we have gotten the municipality to secure a date for a presentation to the management team meeting regarding revitalisation of the parks and related recreational facilities.

The DA has also requested the municipality for red sand and to fence in the park and fix the lighting in the area of Stasiekamp playground, which sees the park used for drinking and exposes it to criminal activity.

It is time that the municipality resume its responsibilities to the community and especially to our children, who deserve safe, healthy and happy outdoor spaces, even more so, after two years in lockdown.
