DA calls for even greater future investments in the Western Cape's Sporting and Cultural Events Sector.

17th April 2023

The DA in the Western Cape congratulates the successful return of the Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon events in Cape Town. This event is one of the most prestigious road running events in the world, with its picturesque setting drawing runners from all over the world.

Major sporting events like these are not just crucial in promoting healthy and active lifestyles, but also play a tremendous role in building the Western Cape economy. The DA will therefore be submitting parliamentary questions to Minister Marais, to find out more about future events that are planned for the province.

The Two Oceans Marathon contributes up to R672 million to the local and provincial economy annually. The benefits of these events go beyond a once-off economic boost and provide a global platform to showcase the diverse and beautiful Western Cape. These events provide opportunities for our residents and supports the economy by creating jobs and promoting tourism.

Recent events such as the E-prix, which saw R2 billion being invested into the local economy, and the upcoming netball world cup, which is expected to bring in R2.5 billion and 120,000 visitors to Cape Town, demonstrate the immense potential of the Western Cape's sporting and cultural events sector.

Gillion Bosman said: “We will continue to advocate for world-class events to be hosted in the Western Province, while prioritizing and promoting the development of the Western Cape as a sporting and cultural hub. Doing so will not only enhance our reputation but also create job opportunities and contribute to the growth of our economy."
