Covid-19: Western Cape contributes 32% of new cases

South Africa, on Monday, recorded 5 575 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 2 461 758.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), the increase in confirmed cases represents a 21.9% positivity rate.

"As per the national Department of Health, a further 246 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing the total fatalities to 72 437 to date," said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

The majority of new cases are from the Western Cape, which contributed 32%, followed by Gauteng 19%, KwaZulu-Natal 18%, Eastern Cape 8%, Northern Cape 6%, Mpumalanga 7%, Free State and North West 4% each, and Limpopo 3%.

In the past 24 hours, there was an increase of 415 hospital admissions.

The country has now recorded a total of 2 238 388 recoveries.

Jimoh said 25 489 tests were conducted on Monday, bringing the total number of tests to 14 926 582.
