 Covid-19: South Africa records 6 381 new infections and 9 deaths

South Africa recorded 6 381 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Monday.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 3 038 075 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been nine new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the death toll to 89 975.

"The NICD… reports that 6 381 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 26.4% positivity rate," the NICD said.

Gauteng recorded 996 911 cumulative cases, the Western Cape 522 934 and KwaZulu-Natal 522 921.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng (70%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (10%). The Western Cape accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga 5%; Limpopo 3%; the Free State and North West 2% each; and the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape 1% each, said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

Gauteng recorded 4 488 new cases on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal 635 and the Western Cape 356.

There were 175 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Monday, 3 517 people were in hospital for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 19 785 993 cumulative tests, of which 24 159 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 26 490 416 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 133 468 were administered in the last 24-hour cycle. To date, 14 833 793 adults are fully vaccinated, and 621 146 children have received one vaccine dose.
