Covid-19: South Africa records 6 041 new infections and 680 new deaths

South Africa recorded 6 041 new Covid-19 infections by Tuesday, along with 680 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 41 797.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Tuesday, the country recorded a total of 1 423 578 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 26.9% of the total confirmed cases, which translates to 382 907 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 306 234 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 266 029 cases and the Eastern Cape 190 833 cases.

To date, 8 058 768 tests have been completed, with 39 529 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.

Mkhize also reported a further 680 Covid-19-related deaths, of which 306 were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal, 141 in Gauteng, 95 in the Western Cape, 86 in the Eastern Cape, 28 in the Free State, 18 in Mpumalanga, four in Limpopo and two in the Northern Cape. This brings the total number of deaths to 41 797.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.

The country recorded a total of 1 254 674 recoveries (88%) as of Tuesday.

Gauteng, as the most affected province in terms of total confirmed cases, recorded 357 997 recoveries, with KwaZulu-Natal at 251 871 recoveries and the Western Cape at 233 798.
