 Covid-19: South Africa records 305 new cases and 48 new deaths

South Africa recorded 305 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday and 48 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 435.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 2 924 622 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The NICD… reports that 305 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 0.9% positivity rate," the NICD said.

According to the Department of Health, 23 540 547 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 130 514 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. To date, 13 124 828 adults are fully vaccinated, and 241 661 children have been administered one vaccine dose.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 920 289 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 516 047 and the Western Cape 514 046.

NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said the majority of new cases were from Gauteng

Gauteng recorded 93 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 51 and KwaZulu-Natal 42.

There were 33 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Wednesday, 3 723 people were in hospital for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 18 802 232 cumulative tests, of which 33 567 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
