Covid-19: SA's death toll surpasses 50 000, with 84 new Covid-19-related deaths

The Covid-19 confirmed death toll in South Africa surpassed 50 000 on Monday.

South Africa recorded 566 new Covid-19 infections by Monday, along with 84 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 50 077.

Of the new deaths, 36 were recorded in North West, 21 in the Western Cape, 19 in Gauteng, six in the Northern Cape and two in the Eastern Cape.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the country recorded a total of 1 513 959 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.

The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol is 73 047.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most confirmed active cases with 9 628, followed by the Free State with 6 520 and the Western Cape with 6 143.

The recovery rate is 94.5% and 1 431 336 recoveries have been recorded.

To date, 9 090 273 tests have been completed, with 12 794 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.
