Covid-19: SA surpasses the 15-million vaccination mark

South Africa surpassed the 15-million Covid-19 vaccinations mark as of Tuesday.

According to the national health department's dashboard, 15 188 787 vaccinations had been administered as of 17:00.

This according to data captured on the Electronic Vaccination Data system, excluding vaccination records captured on paper.

The country recorded 3 699 new confirmed Covid-19 cases and 300 deaths in the past 24 hours.

This brought the total number of laboratory confirmed cases to 2 864 534, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

"The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal [25%], followed by the Eastern Cape [18%]. The Western Cape accounted for 17%; Free State accounted for 14%; Gauteng province accounted for 9%; Northern Cape accounted for 8%; North West accounted for 5%; Mpumalanga accounted for 4% and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today's new cases," the NICD said in a statement.

KZN recorded 932 cases, followed by the Eastern Cape with 663 and Western Cape with 633.

A total of 85 302 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded to date.The NICD added there had been an increase of 323 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, an increase from Monday's admissions when 163 were recorded. According to the department, the cumulative number of recoveries now stood at 2 688 692, with a recovery rate of 93.9%

To date, 17 142 604 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
