 Covid-19: SA records 1 931 new infections and 17 new deaths

South Africa recorded 1 931 new Covid-19 infections on Sunday, representing an 8.6% positivity rate.

In addition, 17 new Covid-19 deaths were reported over the weekend, increasing the death toll to 94 177.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), the country has recorded a total of 3 581 359 laboratory-confirmed cases. 

To date, Gauteng has recorded the most cases, with 1 160 814, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 639 644 cases and the Western Cape with 624 496.

Most new cases are from Gauteng (26%), followed by the Western Cape (20%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 19%; Mpumalanga 9%; Limpopo 8%; the North West 7%; the Eastern Cape 5%; the Northern Cape 4%; and the Free State 3%.

Gauteng recorded 494 new cases on Sunday, with the Western Cape recording 386 and KwaZulu-Natal 371.

There has been an increase of 26 admissions with a total of 6 595 people in public and private hospitals.

South Africa has conducted 22 024 246 Covid-19 tests.

According to the Department of Health, 29 369 021 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in total. Of those, 5 120 were administered on Sunday.

To date, 16 262 118 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 139 422 doses have been administered.
