Covid-19: More than 4-million jabs administered in the Western Cape

The Western Cape Department of Health has administered 4 005 802 Covid-19 jabs to 2 433 085 people.

According to the national Department of Health, 48.89% of the adult population in that province has been vaccinated.

In the 60+ age group, 70% of the population has received at a least one jab and almost 60% of those aged 50 to 59 has received at least one vaccine dose.

Data from the Western Cape health department suggests that people older than 50 are 7.5 times more at risk of dying of Covid-19.

According to the department's statistics, age is the single biggest risk factor for Covid-19-related death – even more so than comorbidities, such as kidney disease, HIV and diabetes - said Western Cape health department head Keith Cloete.

More than half of adults aged 35 to 49 have received at least one jab; 770 397 people received at least one dose.

In the 18-to-34 years old age cohort, the biggest demographic of 2 057 781 people, 37% received at least one vaccine dose.

By Monday, 24 754 316 jabs had been administered nationally.

The department said 355 902 children had received a single dose and of these, 51 439 were administered in the Western Cape.

Premier Alan Winde said: "A big thank you to everyone involved in our vaccine rollout programme, and of course, to every single person who chose to get vaccinated. If you are 50+ or with comorbidities, please get vaccinated as soon as you can."
