 Covid-19: 989 new cases, death toll stands at 99 966

South Africa recorded 989 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, representing a 5.9% positivity rate.

No new Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the last 48 hours, and the death toll stands at 99 966.

Most new cases are from Gauteng (37%), followed by the Western Cape (29%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 20%, Mpumalanga 4%, the Eastern Cape and North West 3% each, the Free State 2%, and Limpopo and the Northern Cape 1% each.

Gauteng recorded 362 new cases on Sunday, with the Western Cape recording 286 and KwaZulu-Natal 199.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 3 713 252 laboratory-confirmed cases. Gauteng is the most impacted, with 1 206 956 cases in total, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 659 228 cases and Western Cape with 649 545.

There was an increase of seven hospital admissions in the past 24 hours. There are 1 961 people in public and private hospitals.

South Africa conducted 23 744 362 tests and 16 849 of those were carried out in the last 24-hour period.

According to the Department of Health, 33 405 701 vaccines have been administered in total. Of those, 4 759 were administered on Sunday.

To date, 17 433 252 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 909 475 doses have been administered.
