 Covid-19: 6 762 new infections recorded in South Africa, as deaths increase by 181

South Africa recorded 6 762 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 540 891 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 181 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 92 830.

The NICD said the 6 762 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 15.5% positivity rate.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 1 151 646 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 632 253 and the Western Cape 615 130.

Most new cases recorded on Wednesday were from the Western Cape, which accounted for 28% of new infections, followed by Gauteng with 22%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 18%; the Eastern Cape 11%; Limpopo 5%; and Free State, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape and North West 4% each.

The Western Cape recorded 1 910 new cases on Wednesday, Gauteng 1 454 and KwaZulu-Natal 1 219.

There were 316 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Wednesday, 8 513 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 21 654 544 cumulative tests, of which 43 494 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, as of Wednesday, 28 585 930 vaccine doses were administered. Of those, 72 871 were administered on Wednesday.

To date, 15 929 816 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 040 616 vaccine doses have been administered.
