Covid-19: 319 new cases as death toll rises by 31

South Africa recorded 319 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Thursday and 31 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 251.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Thursday, the country recorded 2 923 054 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The NICD… reports that 319 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 1% positivity rate," the NICD said.

According to the Department of Health, 22 965 123 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 152 049 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. To date, 12 737 665 adults are fully vaccinated.

As of Thursday, Gauteng recorded 919 831 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 515 780 and the Western Cape 513 803.

"The majority of new cases today (Thursday) are from KwaZulu-Natal (20%), followed by Gauteng province (18%). Free State accounted for 17%; Western Cape accounted for 14%; Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape accounted for 8% respectively; North West accounted for 5%; and Limpopo accounted for 2% of today's new cases," said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded 63 new cases on Thursday, Gauteng 57 and the Free State 55.

There were 32 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Thursday, 3 816 people were in public and private hospitals.

South Africa conducted 18 639 800 cumulative tests, of which 33 526 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
