 Covid-19: 3 197 new infections and 23 deaths recorded in South Africa

South Africa recorded 3 197 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Tuesday, the country recorded 3 585 888 laboratory-confirmed cases. In total, 23 new Covid-19-related deaths were recorded in the last 48 hours, bringing the confirmed death toll to 94 397.

The NICD said the 3 197 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented an 8.8% positivity rate.

As of Tuesday, Gauteng recorded 1 162 132 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 640 347 and the Western Cape 625 194.

Most new cases recorded on Tuesday were from Gauteng, which accounted for 28%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 15%. The Western Cape accounted for 14%; Limpopo 13%; Mpumalanga 8%; Eastern Cape and Free State 7% each; North West 6%; and Northern Cape 2%.

Gauteng recorded 898 new cases on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal 483 and the Western Cape 460.

There were 179 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Tuesday, 6 284 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 22 077 649 cumulative tests, of which 36 216 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 29 540 132 vaccine doses have been administered, of which 82 572 were administered on Tuesday.

To date, 16 338 574 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 166 025 vaccine doses vaccine have been administered.
