 Covid-19: 2 597 new infections in South Africa, as deaths increase by 25

South Africa recorded 2 597 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Sunday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 3 559 230 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 25 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 93 364.

The NICD said the 2 597 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 14.3% positivity rate.

As of Sunday, Gauteng recorded 1 155 508 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 635 820 and the Western Cape 619 939.

Most new cases on Sunday were recorded in the Western Cape, which accounted for 28% of infections, followed by Gauteng with 23%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 21%; the Eastern Cape 6%; Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape 5% each; North West 4%; and the Free State 3%.

Western Cape recorded 721 new cases on Sunday, Gauteng 602 and KwaZulu-Natal 547.

There were 42 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Sunday, 7 926 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 21 797 292 cumulative tests, of which 24 399 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 28 903 010 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 4 374 were administered on Sunday.

To date, 16 036 025 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 072 280 vaccine doses have been administered.
