Covid-19: 146 new confirmed cases, 9 new deaths recorded in South Africa

South Africa recorded 146 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Monday and nine deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 88 934.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 2 919 778 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The NICD… reports that 146 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 1% positivity rate," the NICD said.

According to the Department of Health, 21 514 033 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 180 166 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. To date, 14 802 806 people are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Gauteng has recorded 918 996 cumulative confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 515 271 and the Western Cape 513 317.

"The majority of new cases today (Monday) are from Gauteng (30%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal accounting for 26%. Western Cape accounted for 16%; Northern Cape accounted for 8%; Eastern Cape and North West each accounted for 5%; Mpumalanga accounted for 4%; Free State accounted for 3%; and Limpopo accounted for 2% of today's new cases," said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

Gauteng recorded 44 new cases on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal 38 and the Western Cape 24.

There were 24 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Monday, 4 194 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 18 378 836 cumulative tests, of which 14 477 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

The recovery rate is 96.2%, which translates to 2 802 615 recoveries.
