Covid-19: 11 new deaths in South Africa as cases jump by 566

South Africa recorded 566 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, along with 11 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 515.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 2 926 914 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The NICD…reports that 566 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 1.6% positivity rate," the NICD said.

According to the Department of Health, 24 346 917 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 132 316 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. To date, 13 616 103 adults are fully vaccinated, and 319 797 children have received one vaccine dose.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 921 368 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 516 300 and the Western Cape 514 294.

The majority of new cases on Wednesday were recorded in Gauteng with 59%, followed by the Western Cape with 8%, said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh. KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo each accounted for 7% of new cases; North West 6%; the Eastern Cape and Free State 4% each; and Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape 3% each.

Gauteng recorded 332 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 45 and KwaZulu-Natal 37.

There were 48 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Wednesday, 3 597 people were in hospital for Covid-19.

As of Wednesday, South Africa conducted 18 998 133 cumulative tests, of which 35 327 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
