Covid-19: 1 129 new cases and 90 more deaths

South Africa recorded 1 129 new Covid-19 infections by Monday and 90 more Covid-19-related deaths, taking the death toll to 54 825.

In a statement from Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, it emerged that 14 of the deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape, five in Gauteng, six in Mpumalanga, 33 in the North West, 13 in the Northern Cape and 19 in the Western Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.

By Monday, the country recorded a total of 1 597 724 Covid-19 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most confirmed active cases with 5 484, followed by Gauteng with 4 715 and the Free State with 4 580.

The recovery rate is 95%, with 1 517 350 recoveries recorded.

To date, 10 906 020 tests have been completed.

The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke protocol is 395 230.
