The Congress of South African Trade Unions joins South Africans in the progressive movement and internationally as we mourn the passing of Comrade Chris “Che” Matlhako, SACP Central Committee member, and General Secretary of the Friends of Cuba Society – South Africa. Comrade “Che” passed away on the morning of the 20th of April 2023.

Comrade Matlhako, became involved in mass demonstration movements in the early 80s as he was growing up. He was an all-around activist who started his activism at a very young age as a student. His family was working class, his mother was a nurse, and he has three brothers. He joined the African National Congress in 1989 when it was still banned.

Cde Chris was an indefatigable internationalist who dedicated his life to an anti-imperialist agenda and was always ready and willing to stand up against imperialism. He will always be remembered for his contribution to the struggle for social justice and the emancipation of all those at the bottom end of the economic pyramid. He represented the best values of the revolutionary alliance.

Comrade Che was a leader rooted among the masses and a selfless cadre of the Party. We shall miss his ideological wisdom, calmness, commitment and genuine love for the Working Class and its Organisation. This gallant leader believed in a united working class, and to honour his memory, COSATU will continue to call for unity of the global working class, towards the realisation of Socialism during our lifetime.

He tirelessly and diligently served the masses throughout his life until the end. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the Party, and the international community.

Robala ka kgotso Comrade Matlhako, you will never, ever be forgotten!
