The Congress of South African Trade Unions is happy to announce that the 500 employees that were terminated at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, for allegedly going on an illegal strike have been reinstated after the SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and COSATU intervened to demand their reinstatement. 

The Steve Tshwete Municipality employees were demanding the implementation of the adjustment of their salaries across the board. They have since been reinstatement as of the 12th of November 2021 and shall be expected to unconditionally report for work by 18 November 2021, failing which the employee would be deemed to have declined the reinstatement unless there are valid reasons for failure to report on the said date.  

The salaries of all employees shall also be adjusted in terms of a comparative exercise with Municipalities of same size to be undertaken by the parties to the agreement in determining the salary scales of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. This shall be effective as from 01 Nov 2021 and will be paid end of January 2022 with the latter months backdated. 

Our union SAMWU will ensure that his agreement is honoured and oversee its full implementation. 

The federation remains committed to saving jobs and wants to remind all newly elected councillors that their mandate will only be fulfilled if they treat their employees with honesty and integrity. We reject all attempts to purge innocent employees for political reasons.
