Cell C complaint against rival

8th November 2013

Cell C has a lodged a complaint against two of its leading rivals (MTN and Vodacom) alleging that they have engaged in prohibited price discrimination in relation in relation to on-net and off-net charges.

On-net calls are calls made from, for example, Cell C to Cell C, while off-net calls are calls made from, for example, Cell C to Virgin Mobile.

Cell C alleges that its two main competitors discount their on-net prices substantially while charging a premium for their customers to call off-net and that this constitutes prohibited price discrimination. MTN's CEO dismissed Cell C's complaint as spurious although undertook to co-operate with the competition authorities to resolve the matter.
