The ANC Veterans League is deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Comrade Gordon Hutchins, an entrepid internationalist, who carried out underground work for the ANC and SACP in the 1970s.
 
Among these was setting off six leaflet bombs  in Port Elizabeth in 1971 as one of the ANC's "London Recruits" many of whom were members of the Communist Party of Great Britain, such as he.

The leaflets carried the message of resistance to our embattled people, and were simultaneously activated by internationalists - communists, trade unionists, students, socialists and members of the Anti-Apartheid Movement -  in all South Africa's major cities.

This happened at a time when the liberation movement was reviving  and setting up more underground structures of the ANC and SACP which were brutally suppressed by the apartheid regime when our leaders were arrested and incarcerated during the Rivonia Trial in the early 60’s.

The leaflet bombs which were activated by Cde Gordon Hutchins reignited the spirit of mass resistance against the atrocious system of apartheid.

Our people owe a great deal to internationalists such as Comrade Gordon Hutchins, and their courageous solidarity in action, which played a significant role in assisting our people in overthrowing the brutal apartheid regime. 

We lower our banner of freedom in salutation to this gallant fighter and comrade.
