The national executive committee of the African National Congress (ANC) remained locked behind closed doors in Cape Town on Monday to discuss the recently held national elections.

Elections head Fikile Mbalula was expected to provide an analysis of the vote, which saw the ANC emerge as the governing party again after garnering 57 percent of the vote - the first time since the advent of democracy that it dipped below the 60 percent mark.

The meeting was also expected to discuss who would become National Assembly Speaker, National Council of Provinces chairperson and chief whip for the majority party in Parliament.
