ANC KZN welcomes the removal of EFF Cllr Themba Mvubu as chair of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure services committee in eThekwini

Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme House: As the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal we welcome the removal of the Economic Freedom Fighters Cllr Themba Mvubu as chair of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure services committee in eThekwini Municipality.

Since his deployment to this committee, he has been out of depth, clueless and failed dismally to discharge effectively his political oversight role over 8500 municipal workers.

We have no doubt that following his removal, residents of eThekwini Municipality will begin to experience improvements in the management and provision of water and electricity services.

In the face of water interruptions and electricity outages that affect various communities, Cllr Mvubu has always been absent in action.

His absence confirmed widespread allegations that his preoccupation was advancing his personal interests.

Clearly, being in charge of combined asset portfolio of units attached to human settlements valued at more than R140 billion, he saw a chance to become an instant millionaire forgetting that the assets belonged to residents.

As the ANC, we initially believed  he was capable of ensuring effectiveness in the utilization of R43,7 billion budget allocated to Engineering, eThekwini Transport Authority, Water & Sanitation, Electricity, Cleaning and Solid Waste. We gave him a chance hoping he was going to improve. Instead,  he dissapointed us.

Importantly, we agree with the report presented by the National ANC Local Government Intervention that points out that coalitions have weakened the ANC’s capacity to deliver and further compromised our standing in society.

It is for these reasons as the ANC we are calling for the outright majority at national and provincial government level so that we can deliver to our people.

Finally, following the PEC's decision to deploy the Provincial Working Committee to spend a week in eThekwini Region, we are finalizing logistics. We will make an announcement soon. The PWC will attend to matters that relates to service delivery.
