ANC in the Western Cape mum on Danville Smith

President Cyril Ramaphosa

The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on the ANC leader in the Western Cape, Cameron Dugmore, to put his money where his mouth is and to comment on the possible stepping aside of ANC Member of the Western Cape Legislature, Danville Smith.

The implications of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement in April, that ANC members who are charged with corruption must step aside from their roles, have reached the Western Cape.

Smith, the then Speaker of the Cederberg Municipality, is being accused of corruption with relation to food parcels that were supposed to be delivered on Mandela Day in 2016 but never were.

In media reports last week, it is stated that Danville Smith will likely be forced to step down from his position as a result of charges of corruption against him.

Since the 30 days have passed and Mr Smith has not yet stepped aside, is he not in contravention of the resolution adopted by the ANC’s National Executive Committee?

We call on Cameron Dugmore to explain why Mr Smith has not yet stepped down and why are implicated individuals allowed to ignore the NEC resolution.

As someone who easily alludes to the faults and double standards of others, we demand that Dugmore break his apparent silence on the matter.
