Akinwumi Adesina won't run for Nigerian Presidency, thanks supporters

AfDB President Dr Akinwumi Adesina

African Development Bank (AfDB) president Dr Akinwumi Adesina on Tuesday declined support, from various groups, for him to run for the Nigerian Presidency, saying his current responsibilities do not allow him to accept the nominations.

Nigeria will host its elections in February 2023.

Adesina said he was humbled by calls from Nigerians across the world urging him to run for President.

“I am very touched by all who have gone to great extent, with such huge sacrifices, of their own volition, to consider me worthy to be proposed for potential consideration. The coalition groups of youth, women, farmers, physically challenged and well-meaning Nigerians that have done this have expressed their genuine free will, political right, freedom of expression and association for my consideration, with the interest of Nigeria at heart,” he said in a statement.

He remains committed to the AfDB’s plan for Africa’s development, including the accelerated development and economic integration of Africa, he said.
