Agribusiness, food & beverage: Bread class action litigants quantify damages

Class action litigants (including the Children’s Resource Centre, the Black Sash Trust, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the National Consumer Forum) seeking damages against bread producers (Tiger Brands, Premier Foods and Pioneer), are reported to have calculated that the damage to consumers resulting from the cartel conduct amounts to around ZAR 2.1 million. It remains to be seen whether the cartelists will settle or oppose the claim. This matter is on-going. Previous articles of interest related to this class action damages claim in the bread cartel matter have been included in our previous updates (available here and here).
