AfriSam sends its sincere condolences to the families of those that lost their lives and to those that were injured following the collapse of the Grayston Bridge scaffolding support structure.

There has been speculation around the involvement of the AfriSam readymix vehicle which was on site at the time of the structure collapse. On board GPS tracking data has shown that this truck, which was discharging concrete, had been stationary for about 30 minutes prior to the collapse. Furthermore it has been ascertained that the readymix truck was parked and correctly secured (chocked) at the time of the collapse. The damage which is visible on the left front side of the readymix vehicle was caused when sections of the steel structure collapsed on the truck.

Stephan Olivier, Chief Executive Officer of AfriSam said: “Safety is a high priority for us as AfriSam and we take the safety of our personnel, contractors and the public extremely seriously. We are deeply saddened by this incident and we would like to convey our condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy and full recovery.”

AfriSam has and will continue to give its full co-operation to the ongoing investigation.
