NATIONAL ASBESTOS SUMMIT

Information Update - 2/11/98

The Asbestos Summit - why are we having it?

The National Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment and Tourism has been investigating the impacts of the asbestos issue within South Africa.. In 1996, the portfolio committee on environment and tourism in the national parliament was informed of the severity of the asbestos as it affected different communities and during 1997/8, members of parliament visited various communities who were affected by asbestos.

The portfolio committee realised that it would be important for the asbestos issue to be publicly discussed in South Africa and it was agreed that a national summit on asbestos would allow South Africa to make informed decisions regarding the way forward. The national asbestos summit would enable much relevant information to be gathered and shared and lead to healthy debate and finally solutions which would help those affected communities and workers.

The National Asbestos Summit will take place at Esselen Park in Gauteng, from the 24th to 26th November 1998.

The main aims of the summit will be:
