PREMIER TOKYO SEXWALE'S ADDRESS ON THE OCCASSION OF THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF AUTO AFRICA

5 NOVEMBER 1996

South Africa has entered into the global community of nations with the intention of proving that we are a worthy and reliable trading partner. The skills and knowledge which we have built over many years are now to be tested in a market place which does not compromise on quality or efficiency.

The challenge facing us is to ensure that we are not found wanting when the spotlight falls upon us and our products. Having to make up for years of isolation, it is incumbent upon us to launch ourselves head first into this fast paced world and learn to swim very quickly.

High standards of quality and efficiency will ensure that we survive and that South Africa's products become recognized the world over. Our macroeconomic strategy for growth and development in the country provides the framework within which industries can define their objectives and prioritise production. In order to develop an outward looking orientation, we must develop our international links and expose ourselves to best practice in markets around the world.

The fact that we are now becoming host to a number of international exhibitions and shows illustrates that we are on the correct path. The Auto Africa exhibition is a case in point. World leaders in the motoring industry have travelled to be here today and over the next week.

As a leader on the African continent, our motoring industry provides some valuable examples of the manner in which skills and resources can be utilised and we believe that we will be able to assist other African countries to develop their capabilities and potential over the coming years.

While we are eager to learn and believe that there is a wealth of knowledge to be obtained from other players in the industry, we are also not scared to show off our strengths and knowledge. The `give and take' approach characterises much of our dealings with other countries and we feel that it will serve to strengthen both our range of expertise and our specialist skills.

Auto Africa has established itself as Africa's first major international motor show and we are very proud that it has made as its home the province of Gauteng. As our economy in the province shifts away from mining, manufacturing becomes a critical sector in which we must invest time and resources in order to develop it to meet the needs of the twenty first century.

Undertaking endeavours such as Auto Africa is therefore of critical importance and we appreciate the work that has gone into making this event a success.

It is hoped that an exhibition such as Auto Africa will lead to more developed trade links through which we can export vehicles, as well as components and raw materials. Take this opportunity to talk and learn from each other. The true success of this event will lie in the number of handshakes which place the seal on profitable deals for all.

With the belief that Auto Africa will of great value to many observes who come to either discuss business or simply to sneak a look at some of the magnificent cars on display, we are very happy to declare the first Auto Africa exhibition officially open.

Thank You
