HEALTH PROFESSIONS ACT, 1974 (ACT NO. 56 OF 1974)

REGULATIONS RELATING TO QUALIFICATIONS FOR REGISTRATION OF ARTS THERAPISTS AND REGISTRATION OF PERSONS QUALIFIED OUTSIDE THE REPUBLIC

The Minister of Health intends, in consultation with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, in terms of 61(1), read with sections 24 and 25 of the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974), to make the regulations in the Schedule.

Interested persons are invited to submit any substantiated comments or representations on the proposed regulations to the Director-General of Health, Private Bag X828, Pretoria, 001 (for the attention of the Director: Human Resource Development), within two months of the date of publication of this notice.

SCHEDULE

Definitions

  1. In this Schedule any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned in the Act shall bear such meaning and, unless the context otherwise indicates -

"professional board" means the Professional Board for Occupational Therapy and Medical Orthotics/Prosthetics established in terms of section 15(1) of the Act, as published by Government Notice No. R.75 of 16 January 1998; and

"the Act" means the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974).

Qualifications for registration

  1. The qualifications required for registration as an arts therapist in terms of the Act shall be as specified in the table below:

Requirements for registration

  1. A person holding a qualification referred to in regulation . shall have trained for a period of at least five years, of which at least two years shall be full time postgraduate study in a training institution approved by the professional board.
  2. In the case of an application for registration that is based on a qualification that has not yet been approved by the council, the applicant shall furnish the council with authoritative information on the training required for such qualification and, if the standard of such training is considered satisfactory by the council, such qualification may be approved.
  3. 'The council may register as an arts therapist any person holding a qualification referred to in regulation 4 who has passed an evaluation in arts therapy conducted by the council in terms of section 25 or 61(1) of the Act.
