PROCLAMATION

by the President of the Republic of South Africa

SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES OF DEPUTY PRESIDENT, MINISTERS AND DEPUTY MINISTERS

  1. In terms of section 4(1) of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1998 (Act No. 20 of 1998) ("the Remuneration Act'), I hereby determine that the annual salaries and allowances of the Deputy President, Ministers and Deputy Ministers shall be as specified in Column 2, 3 or 4 of the Schedule with effect from 1 April 2000.

  2. Column 4 of the Schedule applies to an office bearer mentioned in Column 1 of the Schedule who -

  1. immediately before 2 June 1999 was a member of the National Assembly or a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces; and

  2. has occupied his or her current office or an office of a higher grading according to Column 1 for a continuous period of at least 24 months.

  1. Column 3 of the Schedule applies to an office bearer mentioned in Column 1 of the Schedule who -

  1. immediately before 2 June 1999 was a member of the National Assembly or a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces; and

  2. has occupied his or her current office or an office of a higher grading according to Column 1 for less than 24 months. On completion of a continuous term of 24 months in total in such an office or offices, Column 4 becomes applicable to that office bearer.

  1. Column 2 of the Schedule applies to all office-bearers mentioned in Column 1 of the Schedule other than those referred to in paragraphs 2 or 3 above.
  2. In terms of section 4(3) of the Remuneration Act, I determine the amount of R40 000, 00 per annum as that portion of the remuneration of the Deputy President or a Minister or Deputy Minister to which section 8(1)(d) of the Income Tax Act, 1962 (Act No. 58 of 1962), applies.
  3. Government Notice 8123 of 1999, published in the Government Gazette of 26 November 1999, is repealed.
