MINISTER AND BUSINESS LEADERS TO ANNOUNCE A MULTI-MILLION RANDS PROGRAMME TO ASSIST CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

2 October 2002

The Minister of Social Development, Dr. Zola Skweyiya will tomorrow (2 October, 2002) visit the Nolitha School for the Disabled in Mt. Ayliff, where he is expected to make a major announcement of a multimillion rand project to assist children with disabilities.

"People with disabilities especially children are the ones who are the worst affected by poverty, social exclusion and other social ills. The visit is very significant as it is part of our programme of action to ensure that these children are assisted and given attention as much as possible, especially during the social development month which is dedicated to children," said the Minister.

The Minister will be accompanied by several business leaders during his visit to the school and hold meetings with communities and their leaders from all the surrounding areas to brief them about the initiative.

"A massive campaign involving all spheres of government, the faith based organisations, trade unions, the business communities, youth, women and other sectors of society, is underway throughout the month of October and beyond to register a million children especially those with disabilities and orphans," said the Minister.

The campaign is held under the theme of "Lend a Hand to Protect Children's Rights."
