THE IMPACT OF THE FIRST DAY OF THE COSATU GENERAL STRIKE

1 October 2002

Information available at the end of the first day of the two-day strike called by Cosatu in protest at government's policies confirmed expectations of low turnout and minimal impact. Contingency measures across the public and private sectors minimised any possible disruption.

In the public service at national and provincial levels, attendance at work was at 98%.

In State Owned Enterprises attendance was high, with 5,6% of employees absent from work in the four 1 October.
