The South African Government has been informed by the South African Embassy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast of an outbreak of shooting in the early hours of Thursday, 19 September 2002.
The gunfire is though to have been precipitated by an announcement from the Ministry of Defense to de-mobilize about 750 soldiers, and is being described as a "mutiny" by the authorities in Abidjan.
The President of the Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo is currently in Italy and is reported to be continuing with his official visit.
Prime Minister Pascal Affi N'Guessan is reported to be involved in discussions with army commanders in an attempt to restore order.
The South African Embassy has reported that according to the Minister of Defence, Lida Kouassi the situation is being brought under control.
The South African Government remains in contact with the authorities in Abidjan regarding the situation.
