SA WELCOMES ENDORSEMENT OF NEPAD BY UNITED NATIONS

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

18 September 2002

The Government of South Africa welcomes the endorsement of NEPAD by the United Nations General Assembly in New York earlier this week.

"Through NEPAD, African leaders have shown that they consider political and economic reforms essential if lasting development is to be achieved. They have stressed human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democracy. They have reaffirmed the importance of government with the consent and authority of the governed," said United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.

This support for NEPAD comes ahead of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad's testimoney at a Hearing of the Africa Sub-Committee on NEPAD in Washington later today. The Deputy Minister will participate in this Hearing on the invitation of the Chairman of the House Committee on International Affairs.
