18 September 2002

The Minister of Social Development Dr. Zola Skweyiya will on Friday (20-09-2002) undertake an extensive visit to the areas where children are reported to be dying from malnutrition in the Eastern Cape.

"We want to have first hand information so that we can be able to take drastic measures to reverse the situation. We want to take measures that will not only save the lives of children from hunger, but even more importantly, that will ensure that their socio - economic rights enshrined in the constitution and sustainable programmes for their livelihoods are put in place. I am overwhelmed by the response of many business leaders and some media including the Sunday Times and Tiger Foods, to assist us in this regard. This demonstrates a growing understanding amongst all South Africans of goodwill that Children Must be Put First in all our endeavours and I urge others to join this noble efforts." said the Minister

During the visit, the Minister will hold meetings with the Eastern cape MEC for Welfare Ms. Ncumisa Kondlo, Departments of Health and Home Affairs and officials; representatives of the business sector and civil society, the faith based organisations and the communities at large.

"A nation that does not care for its children is a nation that is doomed to fail. We dare not allow that to happen." Further said the Minister

The reports indicate that recently 166 children have died of malnutrition in the Eastern Cape. Some of the areas affected include Mt. Ayliff, Mount Frere, Mt. Fletcher, Maluti, Umzimkulu and Lusikisiki,
