The South African Government welcomes the decision by the Government of Iraq to allow UNMOVIC to resume unconditional weapons inspections in Iraq.
Since the South African Government has consistently called for compliance with mandatory resolutions of the UN Security Council by all States, including Iraq, it is trusted that these inspections will be carried out fairly and in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
As President Mbeki said during his address to the UN General Assembly last week, "the multilateral system of global governance is the only viable international response to all our challenges." The South African Government trusts that full compliance by Iraq with this key demand by the international community will pave the way for the easing of the current tensions around Iraq. It should lead to the lifting of sanctions against Iraq, as foreseen by the UN Security Council.
The South African Government reiterates that conflict can only be resolved in a viable manner through honest and frank dialogue within the context of the relevant multilateral institutions. All parties are therefore urged to refrain from taking unilateral action and to engage with sincerity in the multilateral processes.
