The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) is not only about highlighting Africa's problems, but also about measures being taken by the continent to tackle difficulties, Deputy President Jacob Zuma said.

The Deputy President was speaking in Sandton today, 02 September 2002, at the Partnership Conference on the African Process for the Development and Protection of the Marine and Coastal Environment, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The conference was attended by Heads of State from the continent currently attending the WSSD.

"I don't think we are here simply to point out Africa's plight to others.

Rather, we are showcasing our commitment to doing something about it ourselves, and exemplifying our determination to map out our own destiny," Deputy President Zuma said.

The Partnership Conference, the Deputy President said, is also an opportunity to influence this global agenda (WSSD), especially on issues pertaining to Africa's coastal and marine resources.

"I believe that there are tremendous opportunities for African States to address some of the thorny issues hampering poverty eradication and sustainable development on our continent. The role that the Marine and Coastal environment can play in addressing some of the underlying causes of poverty, food and economic security cannot be over emphasised," the Deputy President said.

The Deputy President also said today was an opportunity to agree on practical mechanisms, with achievable timeframes involving all stakeholders, to implement a practical plan of action.

"Given the achievements of the African Process since its inception, I have no doubt that this Partnership initiative will grow from strength to strength," Deputy President Zuma added.

The African process, endorsed by the African Union and integrated into Nepad, highlights an integrated and innovative approach to the protection of coastal and marine environments, with the overall aim of enhancing sustainable economic development, food security and addressing poverty eradication in Africa, particularly in Sub-Sahara Africa.
