After a weekend where some delegates enjoyed Johannesburg's jazz festival, others shopped and yet others went to view wildlife -while some worked, Monday signals a return to hard work. If the World Summit on Sustainable Development is to be a success - this week will determine that.
The opening plenary at the Sandton Convention Centre at 09h00 will see general debate until 13h00, it will break briefly for lunch and continue from 14h00 to 20h00. In side events, African coastal management will be discussed from 13h15 to 14h45pm in Ballroom 1 and in Committee Room 4A at the same time, East West Environmental Partnerships for Sustainable Development will receive attention. A roundtable on "Making it Happen" will run from 15h00 to 18h00 today and tomorrow.
Globalization will be debated in Ballroom 1 from 17h30 to 20h00 and the Sino-Italian Co-operation Program for Environmental Protection at the same time in Committee room 4A.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Anders Fogh Masmussen gives a press briefing at 10h00, followed by the regular briefings at noon and 12h30. At 14h30 Global Sustainable Energy Islands Initiative had a press conference hosted by the Prime Minister of Dominica, Pierre Charles and the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Kenny Anthony.
The Water Dome has a crammed diary with 28 different scheduled events beginning with a plenary at 10h00 focusing on Water, Health and Poverty. Parallel session 1 examines Agricultural Water and Poverty from 10h00 to 11h30, while Water Poverty and Children comes under the microscope in Parallel session 2 from 12h15.
An Oceans event on the main stage will be a highlight from 19h00 to 10h00 involving the participation of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jacques Cousteau.
Zakhele Arts and Culture Youth Group open the day at 10h00 at Ubuntu Village, from 11h00 Baltic 21 looks at five years of regional co-operation and from 16h00 UNEP present "From Baltic Sea to Lake Victoria - innovative partnership to transboundary problems."
Nasrec delegates focus on opportunities for effective environmental advocacy in South Africa and from 09h00 there is also a training workshop in digital video.
Today is also the final day for South African Business Week at Gallagher Estate. Capacity Building for Energy Sustainable begins at the Liban Conference Centre and Climate Change is discussed at the Park Hyatt Hotel, Rosebank from 13h15. Capacity Building and understanding the issues of tomorrow takes place at Softline Technology park in Katherin street, Sandton today and Arts Alive Exhibitions and a craft fair provide excitement and food for thought at Museum Africa in the Newtown Cultural Precinct.
The Jozi Film festival continues at four shopping malls, those at South Gate, Sandton City, Rosebank Mall and Village Walk. The African Glass exhibition and sales continue at Ngwenya Glass Village, 233 Khowalo Road, Muldersdrift, off Beyers Naude Drive.
