Negotiations between the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, (DRC), held under South African facilitation, were concluded in Pretoria this evening, on 22 July 2002.
The discussions began in Durban during the launch of the African Union and resumed in Pretoria on 18 July 2002. The Rwandan delegation was led by the Minister in the Presidency in Rwanda, Mr Patrick Mazimhaka, and the DRC team by the Minister in the Presidency, Mr Mwanke Katumba.
The negotiations were centred around the withdrawal of the Rwandan forces from the DRC, and the disarming and dismantling of the Ex-far (former Rwandan armed forces) and the interahamwe forces currently stationed in the DRC.
An understanding was reached among the two parties, and the negotiators will no brief their principals with a view to eventual finalisation of the discussions and signing of agreements.
Deputy President Zuma congratulated the two parties on the commitment shown to finding solutions to the challenge of the restoration of the sovereignty and integrity of the DRC, and achieving security for Rwanda.
