BELGIUM & SOUTH AFRICA SIGN A CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad and Belgium's Ambassador to South Africa, Luc Teirlinck co-signed a General Agreement on Development Co-operation between both countries on Monday, 8th July 2002.

This Agreement provides a new political, institutional and legal framework for development co-operation between the two countries.

Since 1994, development co-operation (including aid provided by the Flemish Community) has amounted to R200 million annually.

Belgium has also been active in police training, land distribution and HIV/AIDS programmes, while working with South Africa to stabilise the African Continent. In this regard, Belgium has contributed US$ 5 million to the South African Protection Force in Burundi.
