STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT ON THE ISSUE OF WOMEN ONLY CARRIAGES ON TRAINS

The National Minister of Transport, Abdulah M. Omar has noted the outcome of the Minister of Education, Dr Kader Asmal's meeting with representatives from school governing body associations, teacher's unions, and the South African Council of Educators, to discuss issues of violence in schools and in other areas affecting school children.

The meeting was unanimous in calling on the Minister of Transport to request train operators to consider restricting the use of some train carriages for women only.

The Minister supports any effort to reduce violence in trains and gender based violence in the society.

The Minister will interact with Metrorail and the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) and request them to consider the proposal.
