OAU/AU SUMMIT BEGINS

The Organisation of African Unity/African Union Summit begins in Durban on 28 June 2002. The Summit begins with a preparatory meeting of Ambassadors from African States. This will be followed by a meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers leading to the launch of African Union (AU).

The AU, which is due to replace the OAU, will be officially launched at the ABSA stadium in Durban on 9 July 2002, at a ceremony, which will be attended by fifty three Heads of States.

The Summit to be held at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) will be attended by thousands of delegates from the African continent accompanying Heads of States. The event has also attracted over two hundred journalists from around the world.

Members of the public in general and motorists in particular are requested to exercise patience as the following roads in the Durban city center will be closed or partially accessible:
