PRESIDENT MBEKI NAMES MINISTER TSHWETE'S SUCCESSOR

President Thabo Mbeki today (Monday, 06 May) announced the appointment of Mr Charles Nqakula, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, to replace the late Steve Tshwete as Minister of Safety and Security.

The President also announced the appointment of Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the current Chief Whip of the ANC in Parliament, as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

President Mbeki expressed confidence that the newly appointed Minister and Deputy Minister would discharge their responsibilities most effectively in accordance with the constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The newly appointed Minister and Deputy Minister will be sworn in at Tuynhuys on Tuesday, 07 May 2002 at 13H30. The media are invited to attend.
