STATEMENT ON THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN FRANCE

The South African Government welcomes the outcome of the French Presidential election as announced on Sunday, 5th May 2002.

South Africa extends its congratulations to President Chirac on his re-election as the French Head of State.

The South African Government expresses its confidence that the excellent bilateral relations between France and South Africa will continue.

In this context it is our conviction that we can count on the support of France in our endevours to push back the frontiers of poverty and underdevelopment, not only in our country but the continent in general, within the framework of NEPAD.

We are certain that the bond of friendship, mutual respect and solidarity which bind our two countries will endure and strengthen into the future.
