15 April 2002
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Dr Penuell Maduna has received official documents from the Cape Town Magistrates court pertaining to the extradition of German fugitive, Jürgen Harksen last week Friday, 12 April 2002.
As it is known that the court ruled that Harksen be extradited in terms of our extradition Act of 1962, the Minister is therefore currently in consultations with the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions, which is also pursuing other charges against Harksen here at home.
A decision whether to extradite Harksen at this stage, will depend on the outcome of this consultations. The Ministry wish to place on record therefore, without a commitment to a time frame, that the necessary announcement will be made in due course regarding this matter.
