YOUTH MEET TO DISCUSS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The National Youth Commission (NYC), the South African Youth Council (SAYC), Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the Johannesburg City Metropolitan invite all members of the media to the National Youth Summit on World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to be held at the Parktonian Hotel, Johannesburg, on Thursday - Saturday, 07-09 March 2002.

The programme begins with the Opening Ceremony to be addressed by the Minister in Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad, and the NYC Chairperson, Jabu Mbalula, on Thursday 07, 2002 at 17:00.

The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Valli Moosa, will deliver the keynote address on Friday 08, 2002 at 09:00.

Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land Affairs, Ms Mary Metcalfe, is expected, immediately after the keynote address, to provide a practical approach to defining a role for youth in pollution-control in Gauteng.

More than 100 youth delegates have confirmed their attendance to the Summit.

The Summit's objectives are to:

The Summit forms part of the build-up activities towards the United Nations (UN) WSSD to be held in Johannesburg in August-September 2002. The UN event aims to bring together global leaders from government, civil society and business to review the implementation of Agenda 21 launched at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio in 1992.
